Sedation Dentistry in Provo, UT (Including Triazolam Oral Sedation) in Provo, UT
Advanced Dental Care in Provo offers three sedation paths for dental work: nitrous oxide for everyday comfort, oral triazolam (an FDA-approved benzodiazepine commonly prescribed for dental anxiety), and IV sedation for longer or more complex visits. Each option is matched to your health history, the procedure, and your comfort goal. A driver is required for oral triazolam and IV sedation.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
You stay awake and talking, but relaxed and comfortable. It wears off in minutes and you can drive yourself home.
Oral Sedation
A pill taken before the visit. You are drowsy but responsive. You will need a ride home.
Have questions?
Been avoiding the dentist? Call the office and ask for a comfort consult. No procedure, just a conversation.
IV Sedation
Deep relaxation for longer or complex procedures: implants, multiple extractions, or a lot of restorative work grouped into one visit.
For Dental Anxiety
If the last visit went badly, or your last visit was decades ago, we take that seriously. We move at your pace and explain everything before it happens.
What to Expect
It starts with a comfort consult before any dental work: we meet, talk about what has happened before, and pick the right sedation level together. On the day of the visit you arrive with a driver where needed, we monitor you throughout, and you recover in the office before heading home.

FAQ
Sedation, plainly answered.
The most common questions from anxious patients.
-
What is triazolam and why do dentists use it?
Triazolam (brand name Halcion) is an FDA-approved short-acting benzodiazepine commonly used in dentistry for oral conscious sedation. It helps anxious patients tolerate longer appointments while remaining responsive. Onset is roughly 30 to 60 minutes after an oral dose; peak effect lasts about one to two hours, which fits most dental visits well. -
How much triazolam will I take for dental work?
Typical adult dental doses range from 0.125 mg to 0.5 mg taken orally about one hour before the appointment, titrated to your weight, health, and procedure length. Your dentist calculates the dose after a medical history review. We do not share a one-size-fits-all number because safe dosing is individual. -
What are the side effects and risks of triazolam for dental work?
Common effects include drowsiness, mild amnesia for the appointment, and slower reflexes for the rest of the day. Rare risks include respiratory depression, especially when combined with opioids or alcohol. We monitor oxygen saturation and vitals throughout the visit. Driving, work decisions, and alcohol are off limits for the day after a dose. -
Can I eat before taking triazolam for a dental appointment?
We ask patients to eat a light meal three to four hours before the dose and avoid heavy food in the two hours before. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice are off limits for 72 hours before and the day of because they interfere with how your liver breaks down triazolam. Confirm the specific instructions with us at pre-op. -
Who should not take triazolam for dental sedation?
Triazolam is not recommended during pregnancy, with known benzodiazepine allergy, severe liver disease, or when you are taking CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, nefazodone, some HIV protease inhibitors, erythromycin). Patients with uncontrolled sleep apnea need special evaluation. We review every medication at your pre-sedation screening. -
Is sedation safe?
Yes, when done by a trained team with monitoring. We check vitals throughout every sedation appointment. -
Will I be knocked out?
Only with IV sedation. Nitrous keeps you awake; oral keeps you drowsy but responsive. -
Can I drive after?
After nitrous, yes. After oral or IV, no, you'll need a driver. -
Does insurance cover sedation?
Some plans cover sedation for specific procedures (extractions, implants). We verify first. -
What if I have medical conditions?
We review your full medical history and coordinate with your physician when needed. Some conditions rule out IV sedation but not nitrous.

“They were FANTASTIC. As someone who struggles with anxiety they were very accommodating, friendly, and Dr. Smith and the nurses were encouraging throughout the entire ordeal. My appointment was long because I needed cavities filled, a temporary cap, and a tooth extracted. They allowed me to take my time and informed me of everything I needed to know about each procedure. Thank you Advanced Dental!”
